INTERVIEW WITH A COWBOY

At Pasture One, we find partners strategically located to produce great beef, with a holistic approach that meets our standards for quality and 100% grass fed and finished animals. We work with them to finish animals in their peak season when they’ll have the best flavor and best marbling.

We have partnered with VG Beef for the entire winter supply, from end of November through February. Rodney Vickery and Bill Godfrey are a father and son-in-law team that operates two ranches in central Oklahoma that make up VG Beef. They utilize a combination of perennial pastures and fallow farmland to graze their all natural grass fed beef.

Words from a Cowboy

In the following Q&A Rodney generously shared his thoughts and insights on sustainable and ethical ranching.

Tell us about yourselves and why you became ranchers of grass-fed beef, raised through holistic grazing practices.

In 2009 I was a misplaced corporate executive and Bill interested me in getting back into the cattle business as we had both had smaller cow herds in the past as more like a hobby. We started researching grass-fed beef production which was really an infant industry. It seemed to better meet our personal goals and our goals for the family land and leased properties. It had to be a product that was healthy, sustainable and create a product that we could be proud of!

How would you describe your ranching philosophy and how that plays out in your cattle’s lives?

While we were still researching re-entry into the cattle industry we were exposed to low stress livestock handling and became students of Bud Williams methods. It is important for our cattle to always be healthy and in a low stress situation whether man -made or as a result of their environment.

What drew you to work with Pasture One?

We were drawn to Pasture One at a perfect time when we had extra capacity and were very impressed with the fact that Pasture One was a company that was truly interested in healthy food, healthy cattle and the health of the land where the cattle were produced. We pride ourselves as being that we are a socially responsible company and are always looking for other companies who have like views.

The secret of finishing the perfect grass-fed beef is simple proper nutrition throughout its life, never the cattle to be under stress, allow each animal to reach maturity so it can reach it full potential.

Tell us about being in the Pasture One Producer club, and what are some things you’ve learned from other ranchers

It is always good to get ideas from others in the a like industry although the best part is to find other producers who believe in what they are doing and are not willing to take short cuts.

We’ve gotten some excellent choice and even prime cattle from VG – what’s your secret?

The secret of finishing the perfect grass-fed beef is simple proper nutrition throughout its life, never the cattle to be under stress, allow each animal to reach maturity so it can reach it full potential. We  also believe that if cattle are stressed due do to health, environment or handling,  (  tenderness will be reduced.  )

What’s your proudest moment as a rancher?

As a rancher it may be just looking over that almost perfect looking group of cattle, although as a person it has to be when a grass-fed beef customer tells me they that due to their health they had not been able to eat beef, but now they can by eating our beef without any problem.

Do you have any secret grass-fed beef recipes you can share with us?

We eat a lot of beef and and have many favorites but in all cases simple is better so that we are able to enjoy the natural flavor of the beef.

Favorite cowboy/western movie?

I haven’t watched a  western movie recently even though we live that life daily but I have seen the new Star Wars movie!

How did the VG team be celebrate  the holidays?

We always go overboard with decorating the ranch for Christmas with lit lighted displays and try to get all of our children and grandchildren home to the ranch for the holidays!
